Causes of Sciatic Pain

When nerves in the spinal column are compressed, they can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, resulting in immense pain. The most common causes for this kind of compression include herniated or worn discs, bone spurs along the spine, or a narrowing of the spine referred to as spinal stenosis.

Pain is usually felt on one side of the body, starting in the lower back, and radiating down through the buttocks to the lower legs.

COMMON RISK FACTORS:

OBESITY

Sciatica could be triggered by excessive body weight, which contributes to higher stresses on the spine.

SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

Sitting for long periods with poor posture make individuals more prone to develop sciatica versus people who are active.

AGE-RELATED ISSUES

A herniated disc in the neck can cause chronic pain and discomfort if it presses on the nerves which branch out along from the spinal cord to the neck tissues.

DEGENERATIVE DISCS

When the discs cushioning our vertebrae get worn down, it increases the pressure on the sciatic nerve and surrounding tissues.
Fortunately, chronic neck pain, as well as acute neck pain caused from injury, can be effectively treated without the need for addictive pain medications or surgery. Contact us to learn more.
